"Still, Lawson's skill set is much coveted by corporate counsel these days due to the explosion in the number of digital documents that are floating around in business networks. The stiffening requirements in federal codes and rules of civil procedure for how companies handle electronically stored information (ESI) only compound the problem. The demand for competent curators will rise further as more corporations finally engage the challenge: About 46 percent of American companies haven't even begun addressing this business problem, according to a survey by Chicago-based Huron Consulting Group. "Not even five years ago, legal records management was not considered a significant business function in a corporation," says Shahzad Bashir, Huron's vice president of legal consulting. "But in today's world, the risks are high-information proliferation is here, and it has really put records management on the spot."
